MailMate overview

MailMate is an ambitious, powerful email client for OS X. It is designed for and only supports IMAP while still working in full when offline. MailMate has state-of-the-art searching capabilities and correspondingly advanced smart mailboxes. I don't grasp what the dev has in mind: 4 years without an official release, and he recommends "new users to use the latest beta release" on his download page... 🤔 And there are always new betas (latest being 6065 at the time at this writing).

Though development seems to continue (see bottom of https://updates.mailmate-app.com/archives/), there's not been an official release for one year+. The first one on that page is v1.14 ( build 5820) from 2020-09-03 and seems to work ok, with dark mode too. The other archives, there, contain a single file without an extension (I've tried to add ".app" to it to no avail...), I suppose it's just a repository for the dev himself.

This is the definitive successor as a Mac e-mail client to Qualcomm’s Eudora Pro which I used on the MS Windows OS and with better IMAP support. Reviewers talking about price often focus on optics and not substance. Remember how much Eudora Pro used to cost? I believe $80 circa 1997.

The more I use MailMate, the more impressed I become. I purchased a copy of MailMate several years ago, but didn't start using it in earnest until recently -- partly because of some interface things that I (initially) disliked. But each of those things has either become very useful now that I understand how it works, or else could be reconfigured to get something I liked. I'm especially happy with MailMate's powerful search syntax and display options. As part of my work, I frequently need to search through a large archive of old emails, and Apple Mail's limited search options often made it difficult and frustrating to find what I was looking for. MailMate makes it much easier.
